Shopee for deals, Zalora for fashion, Carousell for secondhand — Singapore E-commerce AI Visibility Index
Week 1 index: AI routes Singapore shopping by category — Shopee, Lazada, Zalora, and Carousell — across four engines.
This is Week 1 of the Singapore E-commerce AI Visibility Index — measuring which platforms AI engines name when shoppers ask where to buy online in Singapore.
The run draws from the AI Visibility Week 1 experiment (manifest 2026-06-29) across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Gemini.
Headline finding
AI does not crown one shopping app. It routes by category.
Shopee wins deals and “best overall value.” Lazada wins branded electronics. Zalora wins fashion — unanimously. Carousell wins secondhand — unanimously. Brands fighting for a single “best platform” mention are competing for the wrong query.
Locked prompt kit (core index)
| ID | Prompt theme | Runs |
|---|---|---|
| P24 | Best online shopping platform (SG) | 3 |
| P25 | Shop electronics online (SG) | 3 |
| P26 | Buy clothes online (SG) | 3 |
| P27 | Buy second-hand online (SG) | 3 |
| P28 | Best grocery delivery (SG) | 3 |
| P29 | Cheapest online shopping (SG) | 3 |
| P30 | Best 11.11 deals (SG) | 3 |
Brand prompts (P31–P36) cover Shopee, Lazada vs Shopee, Zalora, Qoo10, RedMart, and Carousell. SEA prompts (P37–P39) repeat “best online shopping in Southeast Asia” for SG, MY, and ID.
Visibility matrix — AI category routing
| Shopper intent | Consensus winner | Agreement |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest / deals / 11.11 | Shopee | Very high |
| Best overall value | Shopee | High (Perplexity sometimes leads Lazada) |
| Electronics / authenticity | Lazada / LazMall | Medium (Amazon/Shopee also appear) |
| Clothes / fashion | Zalora | Unanimous (12/12) |
| Second-hand | Carousell | Unanimous (12/12) |
| Grocery delivery | Split | RedMart vs FairPrice |
| SEA best platform | Shopee | Very high (SG/MY/ID) |
What Week 1 shows
Category ownership beats platform ownership. Zalora and Carousell did not need to win “best shopping platform” to dominate AI answers in their niches. Vertical specialists can outrank horizontal marketplaces on the prompts that matter for their category.
Shopee is the price and regional default. Cheapest, 11.11, and SEA-wide prompts converge on Shopee. TikTok Shop appears as a rising challenger in regional framing (especially MY), but does not yet displace Shopee on Singapore category prompts.
Lazada vs Shopee is a draw by design. Head-to-head prompts refuse an overall winner. Engines assign category victories — the commercially useful story for both brands’ AEO teams.
Grocery is the contested gap. RedMart leads on ChatGPT/Gemini/Perplexity selection framing; Google AI Mode often prefers FairPrice for reliability. This is the clearest e-commerce category without a stable AI champion.
Qoo10 is the brand-trajectory disagreement. ChatGPT frames decline; Perplexity is more neutral/positive. Useful as a reputation-monitoring case, weaker as a flagship Index claim.
Citation landscape
| Source type | Pattern in Week 1 |
|---|---|
| reddit.com | Highest citation volume — lived shopping experience |
| cube.asia / market reports | SEA share narratives (Shopee leadership) |
| Comparison blogs (ShopBack, J&T listicles) | Lazada vs Shopee framing |
| mha.gov.sg | Trust signals for Shopee and Carousell safety |
| Official platform domains | Present but secondary to third-party + Reddit |
Implication for AEO: Reddit threads and comparison listicles shape shopping answers more than brand homepages. Vertical pages (“best fashion app Singapore,” “safe secondhand Singapore”) matter more than generic marketplace SEO.
What this index is not
- Not a shopping guide. We score AI recommendations, not prices or seller quality.
- Not a Lazada vs Shopee product review. The Index records how engines split the category.
- Not TikTok Shop market sizing. Rising mentions are noted; Week 1 does not treat TikTok Shop as a Singapore category winner.

Frequently asked questions
- Which online shopping platform does AI recommend in Singapore?
- For general “best platform” and “cheapest” prompts, Shopee is the most common overall pick. For electronics and authenticated brands, Lazada / LazMall often leads. For clothes, Zalora wins unanimously. For secondhand, Carousell wins unanimously. AI answers are a category map, not a single champion.
- Who wins Lazada vs Shopee in AI answers?
- Neither wins overall. Week 1 head-to-head prompts return a split: Shopee for bargains, vouchers, and everyday items; Lazada for branded goods, electronics warranty via LazMall, and often groceries via RedMart. Engines recommend choosing by category.
- Does Zalora beat Shopee for fashion in AI search?
- Yes on the dedicated clothes prompt. Across all four engines and all three runs (12/12 files), Zalora was the first recommendation for buying clothes online in Singapore. Shopee appears as a budget alternative, not the fashion leader.
- Is Carousell the AI default for secondhand in Singapore?
- Yes. Carousell won every secondhand prompt run in Week 1, and brand-trust prompts affirm it as safe when buyers use in-app payment and Buyer Protection. Facebook Marketplace appears for bulky items; Refit for preloved fashion.
- How was this index measured?
- Citable ran e-commerce prompts from the Week 1 AI Visibility experiment (manifest 2026-06-29) across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Gemini. Category prompts typically ran three times; brand prompts once. Winners reflect primary recommendations across runs.
