Singapore Airlines and AirAsia dominate SEA travel AI answers — Travel AI Visibility Index, Week 1
Week 1 index: SIA leads full-service and AirAsia leads budget — even when prompts are asked from Japan or Indonesia.
This is Week 1 of the SEA Travel AI Visibility Index — measuring which airlines and booking platforms AI engines name for Southeast Asia travel.
The run draws from the AI Visibility Week 1 experiment (manifest 2026-06-29) across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Gemini.
Headline finding
Singapore Airlines and AirAsia dominate SEA travel AI answers — even when the prompt is asked from Japan or Indonesia.
Full-service prompts converge on SIA. Budget prompts converge on AirAsia. Locale changes framing more than winners.
Locked prompt kit (core index)

What Week 1 shows
Two airline brands own the category language. SIA is the premium default; AirAsia is the budget default. Scoot inherits SIA’s safety halo as a reliable LCC. That parent-brand transfer is visible in brand-reputation prompts too.
Klook and Agoda won vertical jobs. Activities and Singapore hotel pricing show strong cross-engine agreement — clearer than the messy “best booking website” and “cheapest flights” prompts, where compare tools and book tools get conflated.
Locale barely moves airline rankings. With identical prompt text, JP and ID country parameters still produce SIA-led premium answers. ANA/JAL and Indonesian carriers appear in supporting casts but do not displace the SIA/AirAsia hierarchy. For AEO, home-market content alone is not enough to overturn regional brand gravity.
Loyalty is a tie narrative. KrisFlyer and Asia Miles are framed as the two serious Asian programmes; engines avoid a hard single winner.
Brand sentiment is nuanced, not binary. SIA is “worth a moderate premium.” AirAsia is “best value, mixed reliability.” Agoda and Klook are trustworthy with marketplace/support caveats — the standard AI trust pattern.
Citation landscape
| Source type | Pattern in Week 1 |
|---|---|
| reddit.com | Flight and award-travel lived experience |
| Traveloka / Alternative Airlines listicles | Airline and OTA roundups |
| Trustpilot / TripAdvisor | Brand-trust prompts |
| The Points Guy / NerdWallet-style sources | SIA premium / loyalty framing |
| klook.com / OTA domains | Self-citation and product confirmation |
Implication for AEO: travel brands need presence in Reddit and regional OTA comparison content, not only official route pages. Vertical prompts (“best activities app Asia,” “cheapest hotel SG”) are more winnable than vague “best airline” battles against SIA/AirAsia.
What this index is not
- Not a fare sale tracker. Recommendations reflect AI consensus, not live ticket prices.
- Not a Skytrax ranking. We score AI mention leadership, not cabin quality.
- Not Japan- or Indonesia-native market research. Locale prompts show AI’s country sensitivity — which proved weak for airlines.

Sources and methodology
Week 1 of the SEA Travel AI Visibility Index. Prompts from the AI Visibility Week 1 manifest (id 2026-06-29). Engines: ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini. Recommendation prompts typically 3 runs; brand prompts 1 run. Locale prompts P53–P55 used identical text with SG/JP/ID country parameters.

Frequently asked questions
- Which airline does AI recommend for Southeast Asia?
- For full-service travel, Singapore Airlines. For budget travel within SEA, AirAsia — unanimously across Week 1 budget prompts. Scoot appears as the comfort-oriented low-cost alternative tied to the SIA group.
- Does asking from Japan or Indonesia change the airline AI recommends?
- Barely. The same “which airline for flying around Asia?” prompt run with SG, JP, and ID country parameters still leads with Singapore Airlines for premium and AirAsia for budget. ANA/JAL and Garuda appear, but home-market brands are not elevated to #1.
- Which booking platform wins AI visibility for Asia travel?
- It splits by job-to-be-done. Agoda leads Singapore hotel-price prompts. Klook leads tours and activities. Flight booking is fragmented among Trip.com, Skyscanner, Google Flights, and Traveloka — engines disagree on a single “best booking website.”
- Is Singapore Airlines worth the premium according to AI?
- Brand prompts say yes with a price ceiling — typically framed as worth roughly a 10–20% premium, not a 40–50% jump. Scoot is framed as reliable because of SIA ownership; AirAsia as best value with mixed punctuality and fee complaints.
- How was this index measured?
- Citable ran travel prompts from the Week 1 AI Visibility experiment (manifest 2026-06-29) across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, and Gemini. Category prompts typically ran three times; brand prompts once. Locale prompts reused the same text with SG, JP, and ID country settings.
